Burundi reproduces mysterious illness: death within 24 hours of symptom onset
The patient's symptoms seem to indicate “Some kind of viral hemorrhagic fever.”
According to local media reports, all the deaths have so far occurred in north-eastern Burundi, near the border with Tanzania and Rwanda. Symptoms of the mysterious disease include fever, headache, vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness and nosebleeds. The symptoms appear to point to "Certain viral hemorrhagic fever," such as Marburg virus and Zaire ebolavirus, the report said. However, according to local media reports, the Burundian Ministry of Health has ruled out the possibility of Marburg virus or Zaire ebolavirus.
An 18-year-old student was taken to hospital last week with vomiting, diarrhoea and nosebleeds and“Died the same day”, according to reports. Health experts suspect the student died after contracting Equatorial Guinea Marburg virus because of recent Marburg virus in the country and in nei***oring Tanzania. However, both Ebola and the Marburg virus tested negative.
Currently, the area has been quarantined because two infected people were transferred to the Migwa Health Centre in Baziro district for treatment. "It's a rapidly fatal disease," said a panicked nurse at the health center. "It's horrible."
Meanwhile, Burundi's Ministry of Health said it was closely monitoring the mysterious disease and called on"The population to remain calm and report to the nearest health authority anyone who has been exposed to the symptoms."
In July 2022, a mysterious nosebleed disease was reported in Tanzania that killed at least three people. The Tanzanian government later confirmed it as Leptospirosis disease, also known as Weil's disease. Weill's disease is a rare infectious disease transmitted through the urine of rats, mice, cattle, pigs and dogs. World Health Organization had previously warned that zoonotic diseases were becoming a growing problem in the continent.
